On Thanksgiving, November 23, 2023

Two days before Thanksgiving, I had a heartening experience at Greenberg Turkeys, the legendary purveyor—nationwide—of the very best smoked turkey. I had motored in to its HQ in Tyler (it’s not that far from our farm) to pick up a preordered six pounder. The place was hopping, with a line out the door and people steadily emerging with one or more boxes of the turkey (available in sizes up to 16 lbs), and through the glass I could see that a couple dozen operators in the call center were busy. Everybody at the Tyler facility was smiling broadly, both the staff and the customers.

What’s more, all these customers “looked like America”: blacks, browns, and whites, all mixing and mingling and joining in doing the same thing, without any problem and all experiencing the same joy and anticipation of eating Greenberg turkey!

Why can’t this be the model for our nation—with good food for everybody, all sorts and conditions of people, irrespective of income level, regardless even of ability to work, come one and come all, not in friction and chaos and not just coexisting but joined in common enterprise, thankful for everybody and everything, and happy to be part of a diverse and inclusive community?
